I used to think anything business has to do with something of *investment* or *profit making* and all; at least from Financial Accounting in secondary school, one of the definitions of business was *any activity that involves buying and selling of goods and services for the sole aim of making profit…* 💶💷💵
However, in an holistic view, business can also be seen as “any ACTIVITY someone is involved in and it doesn’t have to be profit oriented.”
However, it must be understood that there are still better and life changing opportunities or options that one can do apart from BUSINESS.
WHAT IS BUSINESS?
According to one of the varieties of definitions of Business in the dictionary, It means anything of endeavor. In other words, business generally can mean activities. But in today’s world, business means – *owning a firm or the likes and being a boss*. Well, in the light of this topic, the *generally viewed* definition would be considered useful. But in my own way I will put the definition this way.
*”any activity a person establishes, involving buying and selling of goods and services, for the sole aim of making profit”*
Once again the question comes to mind, “what are the opportunities or options that one can do apart from BUSINESS?
Unlike what many have been made to believe, that everyone should have a business or be a business owner.
I want to say, that would not be very feasible. Because, if everyone becomes the boss of himself or herself, who will do the work in the office? Who would be the account manager, the secretary, the civil engineer, the auditor amongst others. Just like the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 12:17 KJV, “If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?” Not everyone would be a *Business Mogul,* not everyone would be a *Stock Broker,* not everyone would be an *Investor* and definitely not everybody would be *The Manager*
There is more than enough option than delving into business. I used to be of this school of thought that “not anyone has the ability to do business” but I have soon left that school for the better view that “anyone can do business but not every would be a business person”
Only the ones who have the *interest* can survive in the world of business.
Like *Pele* the Ace footballer said “Success is no accident. It is hard work, Perseverance, Learning, Studying Sacrifice and most of all *LOVE of what you are doing*” Generally, passion for what you do would get you to the top of your career/business.
I would just group the other options into two.
Which would be:
Most people struggle with keeping up with the business of their own. They live a life trying to be a *man of their own* and hence, are wane in their tussle.
I would like to add here that being a *man of your own* doesn’t mean you own a business. It means *being able to stay ABLE by your self and living in the reality that your ability has earned you FULFILLMENT* . It is high time you get this myopic idea off our mind that “if you don’t have a goal or dream, you will work for someone who does”
The statement sometimes got many sprawling to discover a goal away from their original mind. This idea has deprived many of achieving there original dream.
👉🏻What if your own purpose is to work as a striker in someone else’s purpose?
👉🏻What if your goal is to help another achieve his or her goal?
👉🏻What if fulfilling your purpose lies in joining or strengthening someone to fulfil his?
👌🏼 *True SUCCESS is when your success is a key player in another person’s success story*
Richard Branson – ✈Virgin Group Boss, once said “To me business isn’t about wearing suits or pleasing the stockholders. It’s about being true to yourself, your idea and focusing on the essentials”. The *essentials* would be the ingredients that fulfills your goal.
There is need for you to reason WITHIN the confines of the box and see the opportunities that lies before you, instead of struggling to THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. If you look enough around you, you would realise you have all it takes to achieve what those outside the box can achieve too.
The truth is, most people get into business and struggle to be *their own BOSS,* because they are too *lazy to work* under anyone, and not necessarily because they want to help alleviate people’s insatiable needs. At the end, such people only elevate the struggle of people and leave them more worse than the *status quo*
Considering the inner strength. Without drifting too much, let’s lens in into our discourse.
👉🏻 *The Professional* 👓🎓
Though the scope of this aspect is a little wide, I would try to fence it in to the
👉🏻 *Professional by Formal Education* and the
👉🏻 *Professional by apprenticeship*
The word professional would mean what to you?
Professional in plain terms would mean
*An expert in a particular field of knowledge*
Under the academic professional, we have the
All of these knowledge and more are gotten from higher institutions of learning. This category of people do not have to start up a business of their own; a company, law firm or even a school of their own to live in fulfilment. You can be a worker in an existing firm or business empire as it were. All you need is add value to yourself by being diligent in your field of learning and become a sound person.
The second category I believe is self explanatory.
*Professional by Apprenticeship*
This includes all work of artisans
👉🏻Hair stylist(hair dresser) 💇🏼
👉🏻Steel and Aluminum Work ⚙⛓📎🖇🗝🔪
And lots more.
Just like the Academic Professionals, You don’t have to own your business after you have learnt these vocations. you can apply to firms where your service would add value. All you need is to be *creative* even as a worker under someone. Then you have a limitless bound of expression and success. With your inner value, you can be a WANTED PERSONALITY by many who would want to employ you and you be a boss in disguise. Mind you, it may not start that way. However, when your value begin to show up, your respect would add up. Where I presently work, I started off as any normal worker. However, within months, my boss took special interest in me, made me the administrator over those I met and who had been working years back.
I had better things to offer; technically, logically, psychologically, professionally and even spiritually. Not because I have a degree, but by the Grace of God, I showed more diligence, hard work and commitment which stems out of love for what I do and with these I maintain a step ahead. Along with my teaching Job, I still have other business I do. And have plans to pursue a lecturing job after my M.Sc and Ph.d in due course. The former is already tending towards realization. All Glory to God.
*Ayn Rand* said “A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve and not by the desire to beat others” I can still remember when I was in *Pre-Degree* program in O.A.U. some few years back. There used to be a guy I walked with. And then, a girl who used to lead the whole combination. (my subject combination – only OAU ex-pdite would really understand)
Then, I’d read long hours with the mind to beat this girl. This my friend do read too and all along, I thought he had the same mind with me – *to beat this girl and get the top position.*
One day, I left the reading lobby with friend and we passed by this innocent girl, who knew not about the secret rivalry between us. Then I told my friend, “I will make sure I read better to get to the top position and that means I’m in a competition with you and her (referring to the girl)”. Then my friend made a profound statement that changed the course of my life forever and made me see life in a better perspective. He said, “I’m not in a competition with anyone, I am in a competition with myself, to break my own record”
Since then, I changed my orientation. I tell you, my performance spiraled up in an amazing way. I left the P.D as one of the top 10 students in my combination – and that, without struggling to stay ahead by competing with anyone but simply by being committed to *BREAKING MY OWN RECORD*
Think inside the Box, You have ALL its takes.
You might think, what about *Job Security?* I tell you, if you are that good at what you are committed to doing and you are favoured by God, you won’t be in want of a good job at any point in time, even if retrenchment catch up with you.
Even the Bible says in Proverbs 18:16 KJV, “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men”
Also, Proverbs 22:29 KJV, “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men”
Even the business men need favour to stay in business. Else, they are nothing but the slogan of arsenal. if you didn’t get the joke, you would get it next year.
OTHER non professional activities would include the non-profit oriented activities like
👉🏻 *Running a Care-giving home for the needy…*
👉🏻 *Activists of various kinds*
Folks, bare in mind that: The aim of any work you do, after all, should be what would make you*
👉🏻 *Fulfilled* and
👉🏻 *Touch lives*
Make sure, in what ever capacity you find yourself and engaged in and *whatsoever thing you do, do it WITH ALL YOU HEART.*
Many opportunities are that lace the nooks and crannies of this side of our society, all you need do, like the slogan of the boy scout’s is *Prepare yourself.*
When your Value is right, your importance will always be high.
*Add values than are beyond residue.*
I will step aside for contributions and possible questions by paraphrasing *Tommy Larsoda* – a hall of fame baseball player and and manager.
*”[in life]…there are three types of people.*
👉🏻 *_Those who make it happen_*
👉🏻 *_Those who watch it happen_* *and*
👉🏻 *_Those who wonder what happened_”*
Where would you rather belong to?
